Throwback Thursday - DK

In the spirit of #ThrowbackThursday, I thought I would drop a throwback from my favourite artist, Dammy Krane titled Throwback (I used throwback a bit too much in that sentence...oh wells).

Truth be told, when I first heard this song I wasn't feeling it in the slightest. It wasn't till I watched Dammy Krane on The Juice that I actually understood the concept behind the song. Basically he incorporates old school songs into his lyrics and at the moment I can only pin point four songs he refers to. That's four songs that I can name the artist and the song title, the rest I know, but can't name.

See how many you can get!

On the subject of DK, check out his lastest tracks In Case of Incasity (feat Davido) and Amin

In Case of Incasity (ft Davido)

Amin (Prod. Spellz)

His debut album The Enterkraner should be dropping soon so expect a review by yours truly

Olawale Jupa + Follow My Lead

Okay, so the other day I heard the latest tracks released by Project Fame 6.0 winner Olawale. Having never heard of him before now, I was impressed and I have to say that the only way is up for this guy! For all of those who don't know what Project Fame is, it's like X Factor just the West African version.

Olawale is also working on his EP Almost Famous due to drop next month! When asked about his EP he said  "am in the studio, working to ensure that there is something for everyone in my EP; the typical club goer, Students, executives in the banks, Entrepreneurs, market women or artisans"

I expect big things to follow! For now I leave you with Follow My Lead feauturing YBNL's Lil Kesh (see he's making big moves already) and Jupa (Prod. Spellz)

#Beauty, Banged

So last Tuesday (22nd July) was one of the best days of my life! Why? Well, the year long preparation for WhatIsBeauty finally came to light and to say I was overwhelmed is an understatement! The event took place at Gillette Square with an array of activities taking place, including soft play for the young one, Dollis Dolls Nail bar, art therapy and a wonderful session by The School of Hip Hop teaching us how to write our own rap then proceeding to perform it. The talent was immense in that aspect I can't lie!

The whole point of the exhibition was to create awareness of mental health and how the government needs to do more to support people with mental health. In effort to show this we had a group of young creatives including myself express what beauty meant to them through some form of creative medium. Believe it or not, one of my poems, "I Hate Music" was chosen to be exhibited (now you understand why I was so excited!).

To begin with we weren't sure how to express the poem as we thought just having it on a piece of paper hung on a wall  wouldn't really express the true meaning and feeling behind the poem.

We decided on doing a video and well... See for yourself

Falz The BAHD Guy

So exams are done, school is over and I'm free! What better way to kick start my summer than to talk 'bout this guy!

I won't lie a friend told me about this guy a while ago and I didn't really take notice (how I wish I did) I was like who's this Falz guy then just let it go. Then last week I decided to download his debut album Wazzup Guy and let's just say I've been playing it non stop! No joke this guy is the business!

Let me start by saying this: we all have that one friend that likes to force African accents and it's a bit like why you forcing it man sometimes just keep quiet... Falz does this but for some reason it doesn't sound so forced, but it's not a natural African accent either it's just funny and when you hear it it's like Yeah, that's Falz on the beat. Individuality is hard to find in anything you do, but for me he has found the balance between rapping about the material things in life, success and just having a good time on the mic!

There are very few albums I feel I have a personal connection with. Confession, sometimes I like an album because I like the artist, but when it comes to sitting down and listening to their album I'll just be sitting there thinking the only reason I'm  still listening to this is because I like the artist, if I didn't like you I would have stopped listening time ago! Get what mean? With this album I didn't have this problem and this is probably because the intro was hilarious so I was sold from the beginning!

This album was both real with songs like How Far which discusses the fact that Nigeria is 53 and is "rich from oil" yet people are forced to turn to robbery to survive as well as the fact that there are not enough schools around. All in all I have to say the song really touched my heart and maybe Goodluck Johnathan should take a listen (not that he'll care). Then there's Marry Me which made me giggle but is another true reflection on our life.

To all my older single women, how many of you say my next boyfriend will be my husband? Then you'll meet someone and be dating for a while (a long while might I add)  and drop the but where is this going? Don't lie! You do it abi? Then you'll be on Instagram and see pictures from Bukky's wedding and be like Chai! Common Bukky got married and I'm still chilling here, waiting for someone to put ring on my finger. You girls really need to listen to Marry me, it might open your eyes a little.

Guys I pity you a little you know, but you guys too what's taking you so long? It's not like you just met her you've probably spoken about marriage with her so maybe put a ring on it instead of selling dreams? Mind you, that ring has to serious like no small small thing so if you gotta pause a little before you get down on one knee maybe that's the right thing to do! I don't know! Don't say I read this blog and came to the conclusion I had to pause before I propose because my ring ain't big enough! I'm not involved!

Anyway, props to Falz for this album! Tellin us Wazzup!

Lessons Learned

I said I wouldn't do this
Give you the satisfication
But I'm here anyway so let's do it.
It came and went, as good as it was it's done
Lessons have been learned

Do I hate you?
Hell no that takes effort
Dislike you? Most definately
But that shouldn't surprise you
Words have been said. None I would take back
See that stick up your ass? Go take it out

Excuse me, I'm venting

Some might say shots fired
Nah that's long for man I'm just saying what I feel
Like said in a previous post
I write for me not you

Lessons have been learned
New people met too
I'm a big girl but still got ish to sort out
Some unspoken words and feelings
But for now we'll leave that aside

Lemme tell you bout the guy I met last night
He had these beautiful brown eyes
Except they were filled with quite a few lies
But hey

Excuse me, I'm venting

Queen is what I am
Any less ain't worth it
Don't get it twisted it was worth it
The banter, love and fun but
I'm a grown woman
I had to realise my faults
Anger, trust issues and all
but all in due time
I will prosper
Just like that

Before it all happened I was happy
After I became a bit lost
Slowly finding my way though

IBK,
Ibs,
Ibukun
It's all the same

Think I' m gonna let the past catch up with me
Nah it's there for a reason
Movin too fast ain't got time to look back
We all got skeletons in our closets
I respect that
But it's time to fight back

Got these demons doin jumpin jacks

Excuse me, I'm venting

You're funny unoe..
Me failed?
Hunny you got it twisted
Count to three
Go on
One, two, three
Oops you just missed it
Success already caught me
So I guess it's time you kicked it

Female Music Producer or Nah?

Anyone that knows me, knows I always wanna be the first disabled something.......

Call me crazy, but I might wanna become a music producer! Hear me out! The last few weeks have been a bit insane with exams and revision. This has basically made me behave out of character quite a lot and as a result I've started to lean towards music for comfort...

If you follow my blog closely you'll probably notice that music is a big thing on here and even when I write poems I usually attach a song to try and put you in the same mind frame I was in at the time and evoke similar feelings. Most of my poems are written in response to how a particular song makes me feel in connection to a particular topic weighing on my mind so I guess you could say music is a big part of my life.

I still feel slightly cray that I want to do this, but with there not being that many female producers out there, can you blame me, but that's a discussion for a different day...

If I was to take this in fully and give it a shot, I don't think I would work in the afrobeats sector for the simple fact that the music all seems to sound the same and nothing seems to branch out and sound different. Don't get me wrong, there's probably artists and producers who do have very different sounds and want to put a twist on afrobeats, but because it doesn't fit into the social norm right now it doesn't get the exposure it deserves and in the same way if your not attached to a big label or know someone who could push your sound out your kinda stuck recording tracks making extremely slow progress, but like they say God's time is the best!

However you could still say that you gotta start from somewhere and if someone doesn't try and change the scene no one will! But for me I would love to work producing music for Rock/ Alternative bands so bands like Papa Roach, Hollywood Undead, Nickleback, The Script and Disturbed, but HU especially like it would be non stop Hip Hop/Rock all day and that I can deal with!  Or imagining producing a song for Train! squeals!

For me they connect with me on a deeper level and somehow soothe me through my weird fazes, while afrobeats just seems to be about shake your booty! OMG imagine producing for Buble faints!

Yes, I have a obsession with a grown man, but like come on!! Justin Timberlake too! I absolutely love that man and i'm really upset I can't see him in concert :( Silly exams!

If I had it my way I would work with these guys:

  •  Dr Dre
  • Eminem
  • Pharrell
  • Timbland
  • Babyface
  • Danger Mouse
  • Pheelz
  • TSpize
  • Philkeyz
  • LeriQ
  • Bahbow
  • Maleek Berry
So what you'd say? Go for it or nah?

Happy birthday Pheelz!

Kida Kudz ft Olamide - Beat it

Ahhhhhhhhhhfhhf!

Okay now that I have that out.. Basically Kida Kudz finally dropped the video for Beat It! And if you understand how long I have waited for this video to drop then you will understand why I ran here so quickly to share it with you lot!

Ain't heard of Kida Kudz? You better watch this space! This guy is growing fast and with every track he releases I can just say mehnnnnnn there's no stopping this guy! Like it's one thing to lay down a track, but to watch an artist just watch an artist grow and improve before your eyes is just another feeling entirely!

Hate it or love you can't deny that it's catchy!

Props to Baddo doing his thing as always!

Oya Komole!
